This painting is a reminder of seaside daydreams. It is a visit to ice cream and candy floss, seagulls swooping low and squawking loudly. It is an invitation to imagine sitting on stripped deckchairs outside of a pastel-coloured beach hut, drinking tea and eating scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream. Possibly Brighton Beach or Bournemouth, or Margate, even? It is an abstract scene. There are no fishing boats at sea. The viewer is invited to add to the scene exactly as their imagination desires. Perhaps, leaving your deck chair for a moment, you move idly around and pebbles crunch beneath your feet. Please do not move too quickly, though – this is not a scene made for rapid movement. It is a scene made for salty air contemplation.
In this series of ‘At the Seaside’ paintings, I have sought to be as minimalist as possible. I love English Channel skies and cloud formations for the brilliancy of their light. Something unique, and I owe much to the Impressionist French painters of the Boulogne school of the 1870s -90s, such as Van Gogh’s Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, Alfred Sisley’s La Seine au point du jour, or Claude Monet’s many wondrous open sky seascapes.
