Line Squall
Off Lyme Regis, and the black outline of the Jurassic Coast, in the English Channel, aboard the Danish-built brigantine Soren Larsen, we were hit by a squall. The wind was offshore and fresh. We were about two miles from the land and close-hauled to starboard. It was early March; the wind was northerly and cold. We were short-handed on a voyage from Brightlingsea in Essex to Gloucester Docks, via the Bristol Channel and the Sharpness Ship Canal. Soren is 112feet on deck, two-masted, and carries eleven sails. We were ‘snugged down’ for the night, with the upper topsail, outer jib and upper fore-mast staysail stowed. I was on the wheel when the skipper shouted up through the hatch about the squall line which he had spotted on the radar. We bore off twenty degrees and were in the process of easing the sails when the squall hit us hard. This painting is the view to windward at that moment. Dark, ominous, and ferocious. The engineer grabbed the wheel while the skipper and I fought the thrashing canvas as the wind laid us hard over.
