Set against a stunning red sky, the outlines of seemingly ghostly ships can be seen in the bay, representing the many vessels that participate in the parade of sail in Douarnenez, Brittany
This colourful painting is from a series of paintings depicting traditional Breton Chasse-Maree sailing boats. In the '90's David took part in the Parade of Sail aboard the 153' Barque Kaskelot together with more than a thousand other traditional craft from all over Europe ghosting along over the sparkling turquoise waters of Douarnenez Bay. To him, it was a magical experience. An experience never to be forgotten, but now recreated in this, and other paintings, in the Boats Series.'
David has a lifetime of sailing experience from Arab dhows to square-rigged brigantines and barques. The essence of that experience is captured in these paintings.
As well as having sailed as First Mate 'before the mast,' he has been a feature film art director and that too, something of the movie fantasy world has influenced this series.
