Tram

TRAM – Like Rome, Italy, Lisbon has seven hills. Unlike the Italian capital, the Portuguese port has yellow trams. The Lisbon trams are iconic and an amazing tourist attraction. The trams rattle down the precipitous, ridiculously narrow cobbled streets, with those foolish enough to climb the hills on foot often pinned in doorways as the trams pass by, bells ringing in warning. Lisbon's tram system is a historic network of six electric lines that have been in operation since 1873.The iconic Tram 28 is a popular tourist route that winds through narrow, hilly streets in the city's oldest districts. Tram 28 is a funicular – a cable beneath the street that connects the down tram with the up tram, one assisting the other – which connects downtown Restauradores Square, Martim Moniz, with the Bairro Alto, Campo de Ourique, or upper square – a neighbourhood renowned for its vibrant nightlife. Portugal is a romantic holiday destination, and Lisbon, with its abundance of churches, cathedrals, castles and palaces, not to mention its own ‘Golden Gate Bridge,’ the 25 de Abril red suspension bridge which crosses the Tagus River, as well as the more modern Vasco de Gama Bridge. Lisbon is not only about yellow trams, but the trams are a vital part of its living history. A dash of colourful Porto is also added to this painting with its Catholic church tower in the background.
